Research and Studies
Over the years, 4S India has undertaken a wide range of applied research, evaluation, and diagnostic studies to inform programme design, assess impact, strengthen institutions, and guide policy- and market-linked interventions. These studies span livelihoods, agriculture, natural resource management, WASH, climate resilience, financial inclusion, governance, and social protection, and are designed to generate actionable insights for scale and sustainability.
1. Impact Assessment and Evaluation Studies
4S India has conducted multiple impact and end-term evaluation studies to assess the effectiveness, outcomes, and sustainability of large-scale development programmes. These studies examine changes in livelihoods, productivity, income, institutional strength, and resilience at household and community levels. Key focus areas include sustainable agriculture promotion, NRM interventions under government schemes, women-led food security initiatives, and service delivery models for smallholder farmers. Evaluations are designed using mixed methods—household surveys, FGDs, KIIs, and secondary data—and are aligned with OECD-DAC criteria, providing evidence-based learning, accountability, and recommendations for course correction and scale.
2. Baseline, Endline, and Longitudinal Studies
A significant part of 4S India’s research portfolio includes baseline, endline, and before–after studies to establish benchmark indicators and track project outcomes over time. These studies cover sectors such as livelihood enhancement in flood-affected areas, financial literacy, coastal climate resilience, and trafficking survivor rehabilitation. Baselines focus on socio-economic status, livelihood practices, health and hygiene behaviour, financial awareness, and access to services, while endline studies assess behavioural change, income effects, institutional uptake, and sustainability of interventions.
3. Scoping and Diagnostic Studies for Programme Design
4S India has undertaken several scoping and diagnostic studies to identify priority geographies, vulnerable groups, thematic gaps, and feasible intervention pathways. These include aspirational district studies, community situation analyses, and scheme mapping exercises aligned with national frameworks such as NITI Aayog’s Aspirational District indicators and Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan. Such studies provide a strategic understanding of development deficits and help design integrated, convergence-based programmes in livelihoods, health, nutrition, WASH, and agriculture.
4. Value Chain, Market, and Enterprise Development Studies
The organization has strong expertise in conducting value chain, sub-sector, and market studies for agri and allied products. These studies involve commodity-wise value chain mapping, cost–benefit analysis, SWOT analysis, market assessment, and identification of leverage points for producer aggregation, value addition, and enterprise promotion. Studies have covered commodities such as Makhana, vegetables, allied farm products, and sanitation-related enterprises, and have informed FPO strengthening, women-led enterprises, and market-linked livelihood models.
5. Landscape, Technical, and Feasibility Studies
4S India has carried out landscape-level and technical studies to assess physical, environmental, and infrastructural contexts. These include water resource and sanitation landscape studies, feasibility testing of innovative technologies (such as Pit Life Extender for fecal sludge management), and NRM structure assessments under government programmes. These studies combine field measurements, technical testing, laboratory analysis, and community consultations to inform scalable and context-appropriate solutions.
6. Climate Resilience and Disaster Recovery Studies
Several studies focus on climate vulnerability, disaster impacts, and livelihood recovery planning. These include climate-smart agriculture diagnostics, post-flood livelihood recovery plans, and coastal resilience baseline assessments across multiple states. The emphasis is on identifying risks, adaptive capacities, and practical interventions that strengthen resilience of smallholder farmers and vulnerable communities to climate shocks.
7. Institutional and Governance Studies
4S India has undertaken institution-focused studies examining the functioning, governance, and sustainability of community institutions such as CLFs, SHGs, FPOs, and federations. These studies analyse governance structures, revenue models, service delivery, and member engagement, generating insights to strengthen institutional performance and autonomy. In addition, governance-related research has explored challenges faced by frontline bureaucracy in delivering welfare to dispersed and marginalized populations.
8. Rapid Assessments and Social Impact Studies
The organisation has contributed to rapid assessment studies during crisis situations, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic, to understand impacts on migrant workers, small and marginal farmers, tribal communities, and vulnerable households. These multi-round surveys generated real-time evidence on income loss, food security, debt, and coping strategies, supporting advocacy and responsive programming at scale.
9. Action Research and Pilot Studies
4S India has engaged in action research and pilot studies that combine experimentation with learning, particularly in areas such as tribal development, sanitation business models, community latrines and FSTPs, and sustainable agriculture adoption. These studies test assumptions, refine delivery models, and generate operational learning for replication and scale.
10. Proposal Development and Strategic Research Support
In addition to field-based studies, 4S India has supported strategic research, technical notes, feasibility inputs, and proposal development for complex multi-sector programmes. These include business model development, value chain roadmaps, and scaling strategies for women-led enterprises and climate-resilient livelihoods.
